Romania, no longer hot for retailers, exits AT Kearney's global retail development index

20 June 2011

Romania is no longer among the first 30 most attractive emerging countries for retailers, according to a recent index issued by consultancy firm AT Kearney. Bulgaria still managed to get the last place in the top.

“Eastern Europe is a diverse region, with several markets dropping off the index because of slow retail and GDP growth rates relative to Latin America, the Middle East and Asia,” wrote the report.

Brazil is the most attractive country for retailers, followed by Uruguay, Chile, India and Kuweit. China comes next, followed by Saudi Arabia, Peru, the United Arab Emirates and Turkey.

Albania ranks 13th, while Russia, 14th. These two and Bulgaria are the remaining Eastern European countries in the top. The first two were placed among the countries to consider, while Bulgaria, in the low priority segment.

Last year, Romania ranked 28th, down five places from 2009. Get the full 2011 report here.
