Romania currently owns one of the widest farmland and high nature value areas in Europe, according to WWF-Romania, ADEPT Transilvania Foundation and ProPark Foundation.

The country’s high nature value farmland (HNVF) represents over 30% of the total farmland in Romania.

The HNVF is located is Transylvania, Maramures, the Carpathian hills, and south-western Romania, where traditional agriculture represents the main economic activity and is a key factor in preserving nature.

The payment for this type of land should be extended and better planned, so that farmers would receive a more efficient support, according to the organizations. These payments currently support only 40% of Romania’s high nature value farmland, namely two million hectares of an estimated total of five million hectares.

The farmers from these areas should be helped to get their products to the market. They should also get training.
