Romania pays EUR 3.7 mln to citizens who won ECHR lawsuits
The Romanian state paid damages of EUR 3.7 million last year to the Romanians who won lawsuits filed at the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR).
In total, people won the right for compensation of EUR 4.15 million at the ECHR last year, reports local Economica.net. The rest of the money will be granted this year.
The total amount paid is two times lower than the one paid in 2015.
In the Revolution case, the ECHR obliged Romania to pay compensation of EUR 675,000 to 70 descendants of the victims who died in the events of December 1989, in a case called Ecaterina Mirea and others v. Romania. ECHR found a violation of the right to life and the lack of a proper investigation in the revolution file.
The members of the MISA yoga movement were also paid moral damages of EUR 291,000. The court found that they were subjected to ill-treatment, unlawful deprivation of liberty, and violation of right to private life and family life in the context of a police search operation related to a pornography and prostitution investigation. The police raids against MISA took place in March 2004.
The ECHR also ruled that Romania should pay compensations to several inmates who complained about the bad detention conditions in local prisons. The overcrowded prisons in Romania have determined the Sorin Grindeanu Government to initiate a law project to pardon several thousand inmates. The Government initially planned to grant pardon by emergency ordinance, but passed the matter to the Parliament after street protests.
