Romanian PM to resign this Friday for planned rotation of power in the governing coalition
Romania’s Liberal (PNL) prime minister Nicolae Ciuca told journalists on Wednesday that he will resign this Friday, May 26, as agreed with the ruling partner - the Social Democratic Party (PSD).
Swapping the position of prime minister was one of the conditions agreed upon when the Liberals and the Social Democrats decided to govern together in the autumn of 2021.
The rotation should happen in the coming weeks, and while the ruling partners are still negotiating, PM Ciuca confirmed he would resign this week, according to the agreed calendar. He will most likely be replaced by the Social Democrat leader Marcel Ciolacu.
“As I have mentioned every time, Friday is the day when, according to the calendar, I will submit my resignation,” prime minister Nicolae Ciuca told journalists on Wednesday, May 24, according to Digi24.
As for whether or not he will remain in the government after the rotation, the PM said he would decide in the coming days. According to him, a decision has been made for the future government to have 18 ministries.
PM Ciuca also said that the ruling parties will discuss with president Klaus Iohannis only after the negotiations are over.
