Romania ranks second for the production of soy in EU

19 December 2017

Romania ranks second in the EU for the estimated production of soy, as well as for the cultivated area in the 2017-2018 season, surpassed only by Italy, reports local Economica.net.

Romania has thus returned among the world's leading soybean producers, after the ban of genetically modified soybeans has caused huge losses for Romanian farmers.

The European Commission has announced that the area cultivated with soy in the EU reached a record in the 2017-2018 agricultural year, namely 922,000 hectares, and could further increase to 1 million hectares in the next year. The area cultivated with soybean in Romania reached 178,000 hectares, according to DG Agri estimates published at the end of October. It was the second largest area in the EU after Italy, with 288,000 hectares.

DG Agri estimates for Romania a production of 420,000 tons for 2017-2018, up 61% over last year. France’s production is estimated at 400,000 tons.
