Romania prosecutes only 2,800 people for taking bribe in 20 years
The Romanian Justice system has prosecuted only 2,800 people since 1990 for taking bribes and 1,400 for offering a bribe, according to econtext.ro website, quoting data from the Superior Council of Magistracy and the Justice Ministry in Romania. On average, 69 people were prosecuted each year for offering bribes, and 134 for offering a bribe.
The biggest number of convictions was in 1997, when 334 were prosecuted for taking bribes. The number has since decreased yearly, to 43 people in 2010, according to econtext.ro.
The fight against corruption and bribery is among the main issues pointed out in the latest EU Justice report on Romania, and the country should work towards improvements in this area.
