Romania publishes documents for mandatory military enlistment in case of war
Romania recently approved and published the documents that Romanian men aged 20 to 35 will have to fill out and hand over to military recruitment commissions in case of a war. The documents were recently published in the Official Gazette.
Military training is no longer mandatory in Romania, but men interested in joining the army can chose the military as a career. Until 2006, Romania had mandatory military service for all men aged 18, or older, in case they entered university immediately after high- school. In case of a war or a state of siege, military service re-becomes mandatory for all Romanian men 20 to 35.
Romania currently has 2.1 million men aged 20 to 35, according to the most recent census data.
The recent publication of these documents in Romania came as tensions in neighboring Ukraine have been mounting. Ukraine decided to re-introduce mandatory military service this week, as a reaction to the degrading situation in the Eastern part of the country, which is under siege by the pro-Russia militia.
