Romania ranks fifth in EU for grain production

The European Union had a record harvest of 331.7 million tons of grain in 2014.

Romania ranked fifth in the EU with 22.1 million tons, according to the EU’s statistical office Eurostat. It was only surpassed by France with 72.7 million tons, Germany (52 million tons), Poland (31.9 million tons), and the UK (24.5 million tons).

EU’s grain production also increased by 8% in 2014 compared to the previous year and by 15% compared to the average production between 2000 and 2012 due to favorable weather conditions, reaching over 330 million tons.

Romania’s grain production increased by 6% in 2014 compared to 2013 and by 39% when compared to the 2000-2012 average.

The Baltic states recorded the biggest increases in 2014 compared to the average production between 2000 and 2012. Lithuania saw a 72.4% increase, Estonia’s production rose by 70.3% and Latvia recorded a growth of 68.3%. They were followed by Bulgaria (56 9%), Slovakia (49.3%), and Romania (39.1%).

Romania also ranked third in the EU for the number of sheep. It had 9.5 million sheep in 2014. Great Britain ranked first, with 23 million sheep and a market share of 27%, followed by Spain (18%).
