Romania ranks high among European countries on harvested vegetable production

Romania harvested around 2,400 tonnes of vegetables last year, down on some 2,700 tonnes in the previous year (2009), and lower than the expected volume for this year: some 2.700 tonnes, according to data from the European Statistics Office (Eurostat).

Romania's harvested production of vegetables was among the highest in Europe, where Italy leads the pack, with some 13,900 tonnes of harvested vegetables. France, the Netherlands and Poland followed.

Romania's yearly evolution since 2000 shows a peak production year in 2003, when 4,600 tonnes of vegetables were harvested, and a low point in 2007, with around 2,100 tonnes of vegetables harvested. Romania's vegetable production last year was more than twice neighbor Hungary's, which totaled some 1,100 tonnes. More on the topic here.

Romania harvested 414 tonnes of tomatoes last year and was listed with an estimated amount of 500 tonnes for this year, according to data released by Eurostat. It ranked low, compared to countries like Italy, Spain, Greece and Portugal. Italy had 6,000 tonnes of harvested tomatoes alone in 2010. More about it here.
