Romania ranks last in EU for mobile banking use

28 July 2016

Romania ranks last in the European Union for the number of people using mobile banking, as only a fifth of the population (22%) use these services, according to a European survey recently concluded by Ipsos.

Over a quarter of Romanians don’t intend using mobile banking in the future, the same study reveals.

By comparison, 47% of people use mobile banking services at EU level whereas in the US about 53% of the population engages with mobile banking, according to the EY report “Decoding mobile financial services - Innovation and collaboration to drive growth”.

The report also shows that the financial services carried out via mobile platforms have a huge potential to increase the coverage of financial services, particularly in emerging countries.

“A mobile first approach is vital for the future development of financial services and the mobile phone can become the main platform for the delivery of these services. We see in Romania banks that have started to develop a digital strategy and to think about ways to cooperate with other sectors,” said Aurelia Costache, Financial Services Advisory Leader EY Romania.
