Romania ranks third in Europe on bicycle component production, but fares worse on bike production and sales
Romania ranks third in the EU on component production for bicycles, and made deliveries worth EUR 200 million in 2011, only a little less than engineering and manufacturing powerhouse Germany. The ranking is dominated by Italy, according to a report from the Association of European Two – Wheeler Parts and Accessories – COLIPED. The value of bike parts and bike accessories production in Italy is some EUR 420 million - a third of the total production in the EU.
Romania's neighbors Hungary and Bulgaria only produce bike parts and accessories worth EUR 5 million and EUR 1 million respectively.
Romania ranks fourth in the EU based on the number of jobs created by the bicycle production industry, with 800 jobs. Italy, Germany and France occupy the podium. When it comes to bicycle production itself, Romania ranks among the top ten, with 422,000 units produced in 2011. On the sales side, the country ranks 12th, with 375,000 bicycles sold.
