Romania readies for highest ever Danube level, potential flooding

19 May 2014

Romania expects the Danube’s level to go up this week to its highest ever, having been fueled by flooding in other countries upstream.

The country’s authorities have prepared sandbags and have put the army on standby to help deal with the potential flooding. The peak discharge is expected on May 22, of 13,500 cubic meters per second.

Authorities say there is no danger for the water level to exceed the dams, but rather for the water to erode dams. The Danube’s level will stay high in Romania for more than a month.

However, people have not been evacuated from their homes yet and authorities don’t believe they will need to be.

Information coming from Bosnia and Herzegovina, affected by flooding, have been contradictory in recent days, as the weather was extremely ‘wild’, according to Romanian authorities.

Bosnia and Serbia have been hit by the worst flooding in the century, according to the international media.
