Romania, ready to handle increased air traffic after Ukraine plane crash that killed 300

18 July 2014

Romania is ready to handle increased air traffic in the coming days, after the Malaysian plane crash in Ukraine yesterday afternoon, which killed all passengers on board, some 300 people. It is believed the plane was gunned down by a pro-Russian militia missile, in Eastern Ukraine, near the Russian border.

In case the European air traffic control company Eurocontrol will ask for increased traffic, Romania can handle the traffic rerouted through its air space, according to the Romanian air traffic services administration Romatsa, quoted by Agerpres.

The Ukrainian air space was closed down for three days, and large airlines, such as Lufthansa and Air France said they will avoid the area, and choose alternative flying corridors. Romania already faces a 30 percent increase in air traffic after flight rerouting. Check live status of flights here.

The Malaysia Airlines flight believed to be gunned down by a Buk missile was carrying almost 300 passengers from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur, and half of them were Dutch. There were also 23 Americans, as well as British and French citizens on board.
