Romania sees highest negative inflation rate in EU

Romania recorded the highest negative inflation among the 28 EU member states in April, with an annual rate of -2.6%.

The country saw a negative inflation rate of -2.4% in March, according to EU’s statistical office Eurostat.

The annual inflation rate in the Eurozone and the European Union dropped to -0.2% in April from 0% inflation in March.

In April, 17 member states saw negative annual inflation rates. Romania was followed by Bulgaria (-2.5%) and Cyprus (-2.1%). The highest positive annual inflation rates were recorded in Belgium (1.5%) and Sweden (1%).

Compared to March 2016, the annual inflation rate dropped in 13 member states, remained stable in seven countries, and rose in eight states.

The annual inflation rate included in Eurostat’s statistics is based on the Harmonized Indices of Consumer Prices (HICP). The official annual inflation announced by Romania’s National Statistics Institute (INS) is based on the Consumer Price Index (CPI). According to INS, the annual inflation was -3.3% in April, which is an all-time low for Romania.
