Romania to again take over Broadway for New York event in May
All things Romanian will again be celebrated in New York with the 'Ziua Romania pe Broadway' (Romania on Broadway Day) event. Attended by royalty, sports stars and showbiz celebrities, along with politicians and public figures from Romania and the US, the event will be on Sunday, May 12.
Proceedings will get underway at 11:00 in the morning, with folk dances and an introduction by Romanian news anchor Mihaela Serban. More music and dance will follow until 13:00, when New York Mayor Michael R Bloomberg will give a welcome message. Mayor Bloomberg described the event “as a unique celebration of Romanians all over the world in the capital of the world, New York City.” He follows other New York Mayors who have turned out in support over the years, including Rudolf Giuliani. New York State's Governor David Paterson has also declared May as the month of Romanian heritage in the state.
Rovana Plumb, Romanian Minister of the Environment and Climate Change, Adrian Vierita and Simona Miculescu will join Mayor Bloomberg in giving a welcome message to the event.
The afternoon will continue with more music and dance, as well as some theater, including a Romanian folk music recital by Ramona Zamfir and Tania Barzanian, a short play 'My life as a Dog', the story of a Romanian emigrant by John Jay Smith, and a pop-opera concert with Marius and Elena Predescu.
This year's event will be the 14th Romania on Broadway Day held in New York. Some 25,000 people are expected to attend the event, which will also be broadcast live in Romania. “This unique event is a remarkable accomplishment of the Romanians all over America and a testimony of your nation’s strength and commitment to the special relationship between the two countries,” said Rudolf Giuliani, former Mayor of New York City.
