Romania to name local commissioner in domestic race for its European Cultural Capital competition candidate

30 June 2014

A commissioner within Romania’s Culture Ministry will coordinate the internal competition to choose the Romanian city that will run in the European Cultural Capital competition for 2021.

The Government will create this new job, and appoint the person next year on this position, which will be the equivalent of a state secretary, according to Culture Minister Kelemen Hunor, quoted by Mediafax.

There are several Romanian cities interested in becoming the European Culture Capital in 2021, and the EU Council of Ministers will decide in 2016 what city will hold this position.

So far, Cluj-Napoca, Bucharest, Iaşi, Craiova, Timişoara, Sfântu Gheorghe and Arad have announced their intention to run for cultural capital of the EU. The deadline to submitting candidacies is August 14.

Romania’s Sibiu was the European Cultural Capital in 2007.
