Romania’s union with Moldova, part of scenario studied at West Point military academy

05 April 2018

The scenario of a fictional, comic story about a future warfare published online by the Army Cyber Institute (ACI) at West Point military academy starts with the union between Moldova and NATO member Romania, in the year 2027.

In the scenario of the comic titled Silent Ruin, this union is opposed by Russia, which maintained troops in the Moldovan region of Transdniester since 1992. Meanwhile, NATO deploys forces to Romania and Moldova, and this leads to a military crisis, Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty reports.

According to Silent Ruin, the Russian forces are better prepared for cyberwarfare than NATO, as they’re using autonomous drones that are able to knock out NATO observation drones by attacking with electromagnetic pulse waves. A Russian cyberattack on a NATO electronic command-and-control system blinds the Western forces forces, which can’t see the invading Russian forces, fire their weapons, or control their vehicles. Russia’s killer robot tanks exploit the outage and move forward to destroy NATO’s crippled armor.

ACI spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Terrence Kelley told RFE/RL that the publication aims to help U.S. soldiers be better prepared for future cyberbattle threats. However, it is only a fictional scenario, being one of four fictional stories ACI is releasing in its Operation Dark Hammer project.
