Romania wants to resume economic relations with Cuba

01 August 2016

Romania’s Government wants to restore trade relations with authorities in Cuba, according to a Government document. The two countries should collaborate in constructions, tourism, mining, steel or pharma industry, reports local Profit.ro.

Romania interrupted its commercial relations with Cuba in 2006 by denouncing their trade agreement, as the country was preparing to enter the European Union. However, the new US policy towards Cuba made the Romanian authorities rethink their position. In March, Barack Obama made a visit in Havana, being the first US president visiting Cuba after almost 90 years.

The Romanian Government is now drafting a new agreement for economic collaboration with Cuba. This should be valid for five years and should have the possibility to extend it for another five years. Romanian authorities will start negotiations with the Havana leaders to convince them to sign the agreement.

Romania’s Prime Minister Dacian Ciolos also made a visit to Vietnam recently in an attempt to increase Romania’s economic relations with the Asian country.
