Romania wants to register kurtoskalacs as traditional local product
Achim Irimescu, the designated Minister of Agriculture, wants to register the well-known kurtoskalacs as a traditional Romanian product with European protection.
Kurtoskalacs is a popular pastry specific to Hungarian-speaking regions, especially to the Szeklerland region in Romania.
“I spoke with officials in Hungary about this and we’ve agreed that this was a Romanian product, but we haven’t found yet an association to promote it,” Achim Irimescu said, according to local Hotnews.ro.
The local authorities also want to include the Sibiu Salami and the Ibanesti cheese among EU’s protected products. The Novac smoked fish is another Romanian product which is to get European protection.
The Topoloveni plum jam (Magiun de prune Topoloveni) is the only Romanian product added by the European Commission to the register of protected designations of origin (PDO) and protected geographical indications (PGI).
The Parliamentary commissions approved Achim Irimescu as Minister of Agriculture on Monday.
