06 April 2011

Romania will receive EUR 25 million from the European Union Solidarity Fund to cover its damages caused by the flooding in May and June last year. Six EU countries have been affected by those floods and the total amount alloted from the Solidarity Fund to cover their damages reaches EUR 182 million.

The flooding has caused damages worth around EUR 876 million for Romania, as reported to the European Commission.

The Solidarity Fund, with a yearly budget of around EUR 1 billion, was created in 2002, following the flooding which hit Central Europe that year. 20 member states have been helped so far with sums exceeding EUR 2.1 billion in total.

The 2010 flooding in Romania affected 37 counties and 6.7 million inhabitants. Over 15,000 people were evicted from their homes and almost 4,000 houses were damaged.
