Romanian actress gets award at Locarno film festival
Romanian actress Ana Ularu has received the Boccalino award at the International Film festival in Locarno for her role in 'Periferic' movie (translated 'Outbound'), which was selected for the festival's official competition. Boccalino is the critics' award at the Locarno festival. The movie 'Periferic' was directed by Bogdan George Apetri (trailer below). Five other movies were in the official competition of the film festival. 'Valuri' (Waves) by Adrian Sitaru, 'Politist. Adjectiv' (Policeman, adjective) by Cornel Porumboiu, Morgen by Marian Crisan, 'Burta Balenei' (Belly of the whale) by Ana Lungu and Ana Szel and 'Avant le petit dejeuner' (Before breakfast) by Cristi Puiu were all selected for the festival. Midway through her prison sentence, Matilda is granted a 24-hour temporary release. Not willing to return to jail, she plans to escape and flee the country. But before the day is over, Matilda must first confront her troubled past. She visits her brother, reluctant to offer any help, and Paul, her ex pimp and also father to her only child who owes her money. At last, Matilda meets Toma, her son. She proposes the kid to embark on the quest for a new life. A final choice they need to make together - or not. 'Periferic' is a Romanian – Austrian co-production. Co-producer Josef Aichholzer won an Oscar award for the best foreign film in 2007. The 24-year old director of 'Periferic' Bogdan George Apetri is a Romanian filmmaker based in New York. He has graduated the Columbia University in New York, specializing as a film director. He has produced short movies so far. Apetri has recently co-produced the American movie '3 Backyards', directed by Eric Mendelsohn, which won the best direction award at the Sundance festival this year. Ana Ularu, the 24-year old actress who has received the award, has previously played in movies such as 'Italiencele' (The Italian Girls), 'Turkey girl', 'Lost and found' and 'Hartia va fi albastra' (The paper will be blue), as well as in Francis Ford Coppola's 'Youth without youth'.
