Romanian banks, more profitable than those in the EU

The profitability of the Romanian banking system reached 13.2% at the end of last year, double compared to the EU average recorded in September, according to an analysis by Romania’s National Bank (BNR).

The return on equity ratio (ROE) profitability indicator rose by 5.6 points in the last quarter of 2015, from 7.6% to 13.2%.

The provisioning coverage of the non-performing loans (NPLs) amounted to 58%, exceeding the EU average of 44%, according to the central bank.

The solvency indicators, although slightly adjusted towards the end of 2015, have kept a high level.
