Romanian bureaucrat and her former deputy police chief husband probed over unexplained funds

26 March 2014

Romanian police are investigating a regional public finance official and her husband, a former deputy chief of police, after the pair were unable to justify EUR 0.4 million of their wealth.

Romania’s National Integrity Agency (ANI) has found unjustified differences of about EUR 417,000 between the gained wealth and the official incomes of Baltat Virginia Liliana, public official in the Arges General Directorate for Public Finance and her husband, Baltat Marian Daniel, former deputy chief of police within Arges County Police Inspectorate.

According to a statement of ANI, between 2000 and 2010, they had salary incomes of RON 1.32 million, while “the patrimonial changes occurred in the same period amounted to RON 2.87 million, resulting in an unjustified difference of RON 1.55 million (or some EUR 417,000)”.

As a result, ANI decided to notify the Commission of Wealth Investigation of the Pitesti Court of Appeal, to start control procedures.

The two were informed about the start of the evaluation procedure, the identified elements, and their rights.
