Romanian Cannes-winning film hits the screens this weekend
Comoara (The Treasure), the latest film by Romanian Corneliu Porumbiou, will be screened in Romanian cinemas starting May 29. The film won last week a special prize at Cannes film festival – Un Certain Talent, within the Un Certain Regard section.
This is not the first prize Porumboiu won in the Un Certain Regard section. Back in 2009, he got the jury prize for his film Politist, adjectiv (Police, adjective).
Comoara (The Treasure) tells the story of Costi, a Romanian who works at the City Hall and lives a quiet life. One evening, a neighbor asks him to borrow him some money. Costi would offer his help but he also has bank loans and this gesture might jeopardize his peace at home. So he hesitates and then refuses his neighbor’s request. However, the neighbor returns and tells him about a legend in his village: it is said that his grandfather has buried a treasure in the backyard, before the Communists took the power. The two go treasure hunting together. Watch the trailer below.
The Cannes Film Festival took place between May 13 and 24 this year. The short film Ramona, directed by Romanian Andrei Cretulescu, also won the Canal+ award of the Semaine de la Critique section in Cannes.
