Romanian commune mayor awards himself honorary citizen title, deeply touched by the title
The mayor of a commune in Romania awarded himself the honorary citizen title and was then really touched when he received the plaque and the trophy from his deputy mayor, Mediafax reported.
This happened in Pietrosita commune, in Dambovita county, in Southern Romania. The mayor, Ion Leonard Dicu, said he received the title on the occasion of his commune’s local celebrations, which took place after a five-year break. He said it was a special occasion as Romania also celebrates its Centennial this year and that’s why the local authorities decided to honor people that have done things for the community.
“I’ve been mayor for 15 years. I’m at my fifth mandate This is an honorary recognition. I get no facilities from this, only free access to cultural and artistic events,” the mayor told Mediafax. He added that the deputy mayor signed the decision to award him this title and the local council unanimously voted it.
On the same occasion, the local authorities also awarded the honorary citizen title to Adrian Tutuianu, a vice president of the ruling Social Democratic Party (PSD), and tenor Florin Georgescu, a member of the Dambovita County Council. Georgescu is also a PSD member as are the awarded mayor and his deputy.
This episode seems cut from the popular comedy series Las Fierbinti, aired by PRO TV, which presents life in a Romanian village in an ironical note. In an episode of this series, several years ago, the mayor (Vasile) also decided to award himself the honorary citizen title on the occasion of his commune’s celebrations, as he couldn’t find anyone worthier of receiving this distinction.
