Romanian Corina Cretu interviewed by EC president for EU Commissioner seat

05 September 2014

Romanian MEP Corina Cretu was heard by the European Commission President Jean Claude Juncker on Thursday, September 4, in Brussels, for the European Commissioner seat. Junker interviewed 27 candidates in three days for the EU Commissioner seats.

The number of female candidates for these seats has reached nine. Under the previous EC president Jose Manuel Barroso there were nine female European Commissioners, and Juncker said the new executive will have at least the same number of female commissioners.

Italy, Poland, Belgium, the Czech Republic, Sweden, Bulgaria, Denmark and Slovenia have all nominated women for the European Commissioner seat, along with Romania.

The media have recently said Romania could have the Humanitarian Aid portfolio, after the Romanian Prime Minister said that long negotiations led to Romania receiving the Regional Development portfolio. Romania’s previous portfolio was agriculture, led by commissioner Dacian Ciolos.
