Romania's currency the RON reached a new historic low on the interbanking market on Thursday, when it reached RON 4.543 for an EUR. The official rate on Thursday was of RON 4.5252 for an EUR, which was however slightly below the rate on Monday, of RON 4.5275.

The exchange rate RON/EUR went up by some 2 percent last week as investors started worrying about the political tensions between the Social Liberal Union (USL) and the Democratic Liberal Party (PDL), which ended with suspending the Romanian president Traian Basescu.

Pundits say the Romanian Central Bank stepped in to slow down the increase in rate on Thursday, trying to stop the RON from getting weaker.
