Romanian director Porumboiu's latest film gets funding from French World Cinema Aid fund
The newest movie of Romanian director Corneliu Porumboiu (in picture) is one of the 14 films financed via the new World Cinema Aid fund, which supports film makers in developing countries. Porumboiu's film 'Un interval de 9 minute' (A nine minute time frame) is on the list of financed projects, and is co-produced by Les Films du Worso, which is a prerequisite to be eligible for the fund.
The fund, started in 2012, was jointly created by the Ministry for Culture and Communication and the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs in France and is managed by the Centre National du Cinéma et de l'Image Animée (CNC) and the Institut Français.
Financing is granted to foreign feature-length film projects that are seeking support from French co-producers. For 2012, the fund has a total budget of EUR 6 million. Each year, four or five sessions are organized, thereby supporting 40 to 60 projects. There is a ceiling of EUR 250,000 for pre-filming subsidies and of EUR 50,000 for post-filming subsidies.
"As we live in a world where freedoms are being challenged and violated in many countries, the World Cinema Aid has a civic mission to support not only those films that are artistically ambitious, but also those that are politically and socially engaged," said Eric Garandeau, of the CNC, quoted by Variety.
Corneliu Porumboiu is one of the best known Romanian directors and a representative of the new wave in Romania's film industry. He was awarded the Camera d'Or debut prize at the Cannes festival in 2006 for the film 'A fost sau n-a fost', while in 2009, he received the prize Un Certain Regard at Cannes for the film 'Politist, adjectiv' (Police, adjective).
