Romanian Education Minister: IT high school text books are ineffective

24 September 2015

Romania’s IT high school text books are based on curricula which is 12-13 year old, said Education Minister Sorin Cimpeanu.

“Their effectiveness is zero,” he added, reports local Wall-street.ro. The minister spoke at a conference organized by Chinese company Huawei.

He also talked about the need to update the curricula of the IT university programs in Romania, so that it kept up with innovations in technology.

University rectors in Romania allocate too little money to IT specializations, preferring to give money to other fields, which are less sought by students, said Cimpeanu. Due to the high demand on the market, students would choose IT specializations anyway, even if they needed to pay for the studies.

The state subsidizes 101,000 places in public universities, but the management of each university decides how to distribute these places among various study specializations.
