Romanian father and son start 17,000 kilometer motorbike journey through Asia
Two Romanians, father and son, started a motorbike journey of 17,000 kilometers to Asia, which they hope to accomplish in 80 days. Valeriu (62) and Theodor Pană (25) only have a EUR 3,000 budget for this trip. On the back of their ten-year old motorbikes, they hope to cross 12 countries: the Republic of Moldova, Ukraine, Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Turkey and Bulgaria (route in picture below).
Without knowing Russian but only German and English, the duo will carry 40 kilos of bags with them, and do now hold visas for all the countries they plan to cross simply because they do not know the exact day when they will enter those countries. In Russia, they will have to bike 500 kilometers a day, because they have a five-day only visa, and there is no turning back once they cross it. If all goes according to plan, Valeriu and Theo should be back to Romania at the end of September. They already started their journey on Tuesday, July 23.
Both with a photography background, the two plan to take pictures all throughout their journey, which will cross areas less targeted by regular tourists, showing an exotic and closed world. They offer photographs in exchange for donations: 50 photographs for 25 euros and 100 photos for 50 euros, illustrating the entire journey through Asia. Donations can be made here (page in Romanian).
The father has been biking and motorbiking for years, while his son has been riding his motorbike for less than a year, which makes their Asian tour a sort of life shaping journey shared by father and son.
