Romanian film festival Making Waves running again as an independent event in New York this year

25 June 2013

The Making Waves Romanian film festival in New York is running again this December at the Lincoln Center Film Society. For the first time, the festival will also hold events outside New York City, with a program for the Jacob Burns Film Center in Pleasantville, NY.

The festival organizers are currently looking for sponsors and trying to raise funds for this year's event. Last year, the Making Waves festival severed ties with Romania's Cultural Institute (ICR), which had overseen the event previously. In the wake of the political arguments over the Cultural Institute, the head of the ICR in New York Corina Suteu (in picture) resigned in protest and set up the Romanian Film Initiative to run the Making Waves festival.

The film festival was a success and the same team are hoping for the biggest and best Making Waves so far, this time around. The Romanian Film Festival has brought new Romanian cinema to audiences in New York since 2006. The event attempts to showcase the best and the most original cinema being made in Romania and has caught the attention of the New York times, which described Romanian film as “one of the most startling developments in world cinema.”

Find out more about the event and how to get involved or support the festival on the Making Waves website.
