Romania's governing coalition presents new pay law
Romania’s labor minister Lia Olguta Vasilescu presented yesterday the new draft of the public pay law, in the form agreed by the governing coalition.
Under this law, the military and police personnel should be the first category to benefit from salary increases starting July 1, this year.
The wages of doctors and nurses will go up starting January 1 next year, but the salaries in the healthcare sector will then remain at the same level until 2022.
The president will have the highest salary in the public system namely RON 17,400 (EUR 3,844) in gross value. The prime minister, heads of the Parliament’s chambers and the presidents of the High Court of Cassation and Justice and the Constitutional Court will have wages of RON 15,950 (EUR 3,523). Ministers will get about RON 14,500 (EUR 3,200) per month.
This means that the salaries of the highest officials in Romania will go down, according to the new wage law. The president of Romania, the prime minister and the presidents of the Parliament’s chambers currently have a gross wage of RON 21,540 (EUR 4,758) per month.
The Social-Democratic Party (PSD) leader Liviu Dragnea said yesterday that the wages of prosecutors and judges will increase “significantly” and not “as a joke”. However, the growth in the prosecutors’ salaries will be 5% lower than that in the judges’ wages.
The governing coalition leaders had a meeting yesterday in the mountain resort of Sinaia, where they discussed about the new wage law. At the end of the day, Vasilescu and Dragnea presented the wage increases in a press conference.
