Romanian Government tries to block additional tax for supermarkets
Romania’s Government has taken the retailers’ side in the current debate around additional taxes for supermarkets.
A draft law, which has reached the Parliament, provides that supermarkets will have to pay an additional tax, besides the 16% tax on profit. The Government argued that such a tax would be discriminatory. It would create disadvantages for supermarkets, as the tax would apply only to them, according to a press release from the Government, cited by local Profit.ro.
The state’s intervention could generate inequities. It would mostly affect people with low and medium revenues who go to supermarkets.
The law will enter into force if it gets the approval of the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate.
