Romanian Government to discuss VAT cut for food with the IMF

21 November 2014

VAT reduction for other food categories will be on the agenda of talks with the International Monetary Fund IMF in December, according to Daniel Botanoiu, Secretary of State in the Agriculture Ministry.

“We’ll first discuss the positive effects of reducing VAT for bread and we’ll present the studies we have made for meat, vegetables, fruits and milk. It would be good to convince them that such a measure will increase competitiveness in the food industry, will lead to better consumption, while helping to guarantee jobs,” he added, cited by local Capital.ro.

A joint mission of the International Monetary Fund IMF and the European Commission EC will arrive in Romania on December 2 for talks on the country’s 2015 draft budget. The document will be subject to public debate after December 10 and then it will be sent to the government for approval, according to the Ministry of Finance.
