British newspaper features Romanian “Harry and Meghan” couple

29 January 2018

The British newspaper The Telegraph has dedicated a feature to Romania’s former prince Nicolae. The newspaper compared Nicolae and his wife to the British royal couple made up of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.

Nicolae Medforth-Mills is the son of Princess Elena, the sister of Princess Margareta, the Custodian of the Crown, and a nephew of the late King Michael I. The Telegraph describes him as “tall, dark, handsome and down to earth,” a “32-year-old British public-schoolboy who grew up in County Durham and was educated at Shiplake College, outside Henley-on-Thames.”

The article traces Nicolae’s biography and relations with the Romanian royal family, which stripped Nicolae of his title in 2015 “for reasons he insists remain unclear.” At the time, it was reported that King Michael made his decision thinking about the future, after observing his grandson’s behavior in public and in private, and that Nicolae agreed to this decision. However, at the end of last year, the disinherited prince said he planned to challenge the decision to exclude him from the Royal House’s succession line.

Nicolae was third in the succession line when his royal title was withdrawn. He told The Telegraph he had no plans to challenge the authority of Princess Margareta. “The bigger picture is that we are the Romanian Royal family, and our intentions are to benefit the country,” he said.

Before King Michael passed away, Nicolae tried to visit him and forced his way into the house, causing a big scandal. He did participate at the king’s funeral, a moment described by British newspaper, in reference to Nicolae, as one when “a new figure of hope emerged.”

Nicolae Medforth-Mills and his wife, Alina Binder, are soon moving to Romania, The Telegraph reported. They are expected to carry on as private citizens as Nicholas co-founded an education charity, and his wife works for the Aircraft Owners and Pilots’ Association. “But clearly they are poised to embrace public life,” the newspaper noted, calling them “eastern Europe’s most glamorous couple.”

The article also outlines several similarities between Nicolae Medforth-Mills and Prince Harry. They both are interested in sports, and Nicolae organized a charity cycling tour across Romania in 2015. At the same time, they both spent time in Africa, value education and have dedicated their time to the causes they support.
