Romanian Highways Company cancels contract with Colas for Constanta – Medgidia highway segment

11 April 2011

Romania's National Highways Company (CNADNR) has notified French construction company Colas it will cease the contract to design and build the Cernavoda – Medgidia highway segment and has started procedures for a new bid. It estimates it will revise the project and prepare the documents for the new bid within a month.

The National Highways Company has decided to start a new bid after Colas repeatedly refused to continue works on various reasons, according to CNADNR. Colas hasn't finalized the design for 14 kilometers of the planned 20.3 kilometers and has failed to get the required paperwork, including the construction authorization. However, Colas has asked for an increase in cost and for a deadline expansion with 24 months.

Romania's transport ministry Anca Boagiu has previously said Colas had asked for an extra EUR 8 million for works on the Cernavoda- Medgidia segment, but the ministry has refused to allot it. Boagiu had promised that segments of the Constanta – Cernavoda highway will become functional this summer.
