It has been a perfect week for Romanian tennis at Madrid, where Horia Tecau and Simona Halep won the men’s doubles and the women’s singles competitions, in a tournament owned by Romanian billionaire Ion Tiriac, a former tennis champion himself.

Romanian tennis player Horia Tecau (left), the fifth best men’s doubles player in the world according to the ATP ranking, and Dutchman Jean-Julien Rojer (No. 6 ATP doubles) won the Mutua Madrid Open on Sunday, after a two-set victory against Romanian-Indian duo Florin Mergea/Rohan Bopanna, the defending champions in Madrid.

Tecau and Rojer have had a perfect run in Madrid, where they haven’t conceded any set in three matches. They won 6-4, 7-6 in the final after defeating the French duo Pierre-Hugues Herbert/Nicolas Mahut, the tournament’s favorites, in the semifinals (6-2, 7-6).

This is Tecau’s second title this year, after the one at the BRD Nastase Tiriac Open in Bucharest, where he made a team with Florin Mergea, his opponent on Sunday. Tecau and Mergea also plan to team up and bring Romania a medal at the Rio Olympics.

Horia Tecau has 29 career titles, 12 of which he has won since he teamed up with Jean-Julien Rojer, at the beginning of 2014. Their most important victories were at Wimbledon and in the ATP World Tours Final in London, both in 2015, when the two also reached the first position in the ATP team ranking.
