Romanian Irina Begu wins Brasil Tennis Cup in Florianopolis
Romanian tennis player Irina Begu won the Brasil Tennis Cup in Florianopolis on Friday, August 5. She beat Hungary’s Timea Babos in the final after three sets: 2-6, 6-4, 6-3.
This is Begu’s first title this year and the third singles title in her career. The 25-year old Romanian is currently 31st in the WTA ranking of the best women’s tennis players in the world.
The victory in Florianopolis has boosted Irina Begu’s morale before the Olympic Games in Rio, where she will play for Romania. Begu will play against Japanese Nao Hibino in the first round of the Olympic tournament. In the second round, she may face the winner of the match between Serbia’s Jelena Jankovic and Spain’s Garbine Muguruza.
Romanian Monica Niculescu also plays in the Olympic tournament. She will meet Paraguayan Verónica Cepede Royg in the first round.
