Romanian miners rally for protest march against massive layoffs
Miners of the Romanian state-owned energy producer Complexul Energetic Oltenia plan to march some 320 kilometers from Targu Jiu, in western Romania, to Bucharest, to protest against the announced layoff of 800 miners.
The protest should start on April 11, reports local Wall-street.ro.
The energy company’s board decided at the end of March that about 800 people working for Minprest Rovinari, a company owned by Complexul Energetic Oltenia, would be laid off this year.
Complexul Energetic Oltenia is Romania’s biggest thermal electricity producer.
Last year, the IMF, World Bank and EC have also asked the Government to massively and radically restructure Romania’s two largest thermal electricity producers, Complexul Energetic Oltenia and Complexul Energetic Hunedoara. Both companies have recorded big losses in recent years.
