Romanian MPs keep law that obliges retailers to sell more local food unchanged

18 May 2016

The Romanian MPs in the Committee for Agriculture and Food Industry approved yesterday without any amendments the draft project that obliges large retailers to sell more Romanian products.

At least 51% of the products sold in retailers, including meat, vegetables, fruits, milk, bread, and eggs need to come from local production, according to the bill. The draft project will be sent to the Chamber of Deputies for the final vote.

The big retailers reacted by saying that the meeting of the Committee for Agriculture and Food Industry was secretive and unexpected, and was held behind closed doors, reports local Profit.ro.

The retailers have been complaining that this law would disrupt competition in the local market.
