Romanian and US teams meet for baseball match in Constanta to celebrate Jackie Robinson
The Romanian national baseball team will meet a US team made up of military staff stationed in Romania in a demonstrative match set for April 15. The match takes place in Constanta, at the Portul Stadium, starting 11:00, and the public can attend the match for free.
The match celebrates 70 years since Jackie Robinson, the first African American to play in Major League Baseball in the modern era, entered the Ebbets stadium in Brooklyn, New York. Robinson made his debut playing for the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1947. He played wearing the number 42, which no other Major League team assigned after he withdrew, as a sign a respect for his performance.
Decebal Făgădău, the mayor of Constanta, US ambassador Hans Klemm and Andrei Mirescu, the president of the Romanian Baseball and Softball Federation will give speeches before the match.
