Romanian Netopia mobilPay, a company which processes micropayments via mobile phones, recorded 2.2 million online card transactions in 2013, with a total value of EUR 76 million.

The average value of a transaction was around EUR 37, according to the company.

According to Antonio Eram, CEO and founder of Netopia mobilPay, the company processed one third of the total online transactions recorded in Romania in 2013.

“During last year, we processed record online payments that even exceeded EUR 7,000 for a single transaction, which proves that Romanians understood that online payments are safe, no matter the paid amounts,” said Eram.

Last year, there was also an increase in the number of people paying by card for the first time, according to the company.

Representatives of the company say the Romanian online card payment market will go up 20 percent in 2014, reaching around 8.5 million transactions, with a total value of up to EUR 370 million.

In 2013, the processing company added 700 new traders from areas such as tourism, services or utilities.
