The Romanian Patriarchy and the Adevarul media group have recently started a dispute on whether the Bible distributed with the Romanian newspaper Adevarul is in fact the Orthodox version.

According to the Patriarchy, the Bible that Adevarul started selling this week is Neo-protestant, and not Orthodox, with differences in translation and interpretation not accepted by the Romanian Orthodox Church. The Church is demanding the media company to accurately describe the edition of the Bible it sells.

In response, Peter Imre, the general manager of Adevarul Holding said there is only one Christian Bible, and that the Bible the newspaper sells addresses all Christians who speak Romanian. “The differences in translation and interpretation – which appear in other editions accepted by the Romanian Orthodox Church – we leave those for churches and theologians,” said Peter Imre. The book was translated by Romanian Dumitru Cornilescu and was published by the Orizonturi publishing house; it sells for RON 20.

“The book does not include any comments and is a fair translation of the original form of the Bible. What sets these versions apart are the different interpretations each gives of the Bible. The book we published does not include any comments or opinion on the text,” according to an official statement from Adevarul Holding.
