Romanian painting sells for record EUR 1.7 mln in Sotheby's auction
The painting The Fake Rothko signed by Romanian artist Adrian Ghenie was sold for GBP 1.42 million (EUR 1.77 million) at auction recently organized by Sotheby`s in London. This is a new record for the artist at an auction.
The painting, signed and dated 2010, had an estimated price of GBP 250,000 - 350,000 (some EUR 311,000 - 436,000).
Adrian Ghenie was born in 1977 in Baia Mare, Romania, and graduated in 2001 from the University of Art and Design, in Cluj.
During the same auction, Francis Bacon’s Three Studies for Portrait of George Dyer sold for GBP 26.6 million, while a new auction record was established for Peter Doig when his Country-rock (wing-mirror) sold for GBP 8.48 million. The auction’s results here.
