Romanian Parliament adopts bill establishing National Museum of Roma History and Culture
The Chamber of Deputies has adopted a bill establishing the National Museum of Roma History and Culture in Romania. The legislative initiative is now awaiting promulgation by the president and is set to become law.
The legislative proposal establishes the National Museum of Roma History and Culture in Romania as a public institution of national importance under the authority of the National Agency for Roma.
"The museum aims to present and promote the history, culture, and traditions of the Roma in Romania, to increase national and international awareness of the contributions of this national minority to the development and modernization of Romanian society over time, to preserve the memory of the victims of slavery and deportation to Transnistria, as well as to combat racism and discrimination," says the bill adopted by the deputies and cited by News.ro.
The museum's heritage consists of collections of artifacts and documents established by the Association of Roma Pro-Europe Party, a member of the National Minorities Council, in collaboration with other public or private institutions and non-governmental organizations from Romania and abroad, as well as pieces obtained through transfers, donations, and acquisitions
Funding for the operation and activities of the museum is provided through subsidies from the state budget, allocated through the General Secretariat of the Government, as well as through donations and sponsorships.
The museum is led by a manager appointed by order of the President of the National Agency for Roma, with the approval of the Parliamentary Group of National Minorities in the Chamber of Deputies and, cumulatively, with the approval of the National Minorities Council. Additionally, the museum operates with a Board of Directors, a Scientific Council, evaluation commissions, and/or commissions for the acquisition of cultural goods.
