Romanian Parliament members want higher pensions

17 April 2015

Several Romanian MPs have submitted a controversial draft project on the so-called special pensions. Some 255 deputies and senators have signed the bill which would offer them an extra monthly allowance when they reach retirement age.

For one term, a former senator or deputy would receive RON 1,200 per month (EUR 272). Those who had two terms, would receive RON 2,400 (EUR 544), whereas those who had three terms would get RON 3,600 (about EUR 816). This amount would add to the normal pension. Social-democrat deputy Petre Daea initiated this bill.

Among the 255 deputies and senators that have signed the bill, there were 20 deputies and three senators from the National Liberal Party, and despite the fact that the PNL co-president said the party doesn’t support the project.

The reasons for this allowance include “the increase of the Parliament’s quality performance” and “motivating specialists from various fields to run for Parliament elections,” according to Hotnews.ro.
