Romanian Parliament takes step back on card payments
The Parliament may change a recently enforced law that obliges all retailers with a turnover of over EUR 10,000 to accept card payments.
A group of MPs have submitted an amendment to this bill, which states that accepting card payments will only be mandatory for retailers with over EUR 50,000 in sales, reports local Profit.ro. The changes were requested by small retailers in villages, who complained that they didn’t have the funds to invest in the necessary technical equipment to support card payments.
The cashback law, which entered into force at the beginning of this year, provided that all retailers with sales of over EUR 10,000 per year have to accept card payments. The law also gave retailers the possibility to give to customers who paid by card maximum RON 200 (EUR 44.3) in cash, upon their request.
The amended version of the law also provides that retailers can give maximum RON 100 (EUR 22) in cash to customers who pay by card.
