Romanian Parliament to appoint new telecom regulator president

10 May 2017

The appointment of a new president of the Romanian telecom regulator ANCOM was postponed for the Parliament’s May 11 session, the same day the two chambers meet for the speech to be delivered by European Commission president Jean-Claude Juncker, News.ro reported.

A new ANCOM president is due to be appointed as previous president Catalin Marinescu left the Romanian institution to head the Strategy Division of the International Telecommunications Union (ITU). He had been running ANCOM for the past eight years.

Adrian Diţă is the government’s proposal for the position. Since November 2015 he has been a Public Affairs director at Telekom Romania. Since March 2011 he has also been a director at Romconnection Consulting. Between 2010 and 2011 he served as a Corporate Affairs director at International Railway Systems, a group controlled by businessman Cristian Burci. Between June 2004 and January 2010 he was a Corporate Affairs director with Vodafone Romania, according to News.ro.

At the end of April, the government adopted an emergency ordinance changing the ANCOM's functioning law. According to the ordinance, the president and the two vice presidents of the telecom authority are appointed based on a proposal from the Government and with the approval of the joint chambers of the Parliament, Economica.net reported. Romania's President previously needed to approve the appointment.

One of ANCOM's upcoming tasks would be organizing the 5G licenses auction.

During the same May 11 meeting, the Parliament is expected to discuss the dismissal of Misu Negritoiu from the position of president of the Financial Supervisory Authority (ASF).
