Romanian phone hustlers conned by their very target: an 81-year old woman
Two Romanian hustlers tried to con an old woman into paying them EUR 13,000. Instead, all they got were papers shaped like money and the police on their tails.
One of the hustlers, who is an imprisoned convict, called the old woman and told her that he was her son’s lawyer and that her son had hit a child with his car. He also told her that her son was badly injured and that he needed EUR 13,000 for a settlement with the victim’s family so that he wouldn’t go to prison.
Then the hustler told the old woman that he would send his assistant, a woman, to collect the money and asked for her address, according to Mediafax newswire.
The old woman realized that this might be a scam and talked to a neighbor who works as a lawyer and then called the police.
Then she cut several papers to fit the shape of RON 100 bills and placed them into an envelope which she sealed and then waited for the “lawyer’s assistant”, who was in fact the other hustler, to come and collect the envelope.
The police intercepted the woman after she collected the envelope and took her in for questioning. Then they found out that she was working with a 42-year old man who was in jail. When the police searched his jail cell they found a mobile phone and a SIM card which they seized.
The two hustlers are now investigated for attempted hustle.
