Romanian PM: Calmness on the political front this year and in 2014 after presidential – PM institutional agreement

08 May 2013

Waters seem to have calmed down in Romanian politics and are expected to stay calm in 2014 too, or at least this is what the Romanian Prime Minister says. He believes most Romanians appreciate the fact that the quarrel between the PM and the president Traian Basescu (both in picture) ended, after the row in 2012, which brought Romania some scolding from the EU.

While most political analysts expect the Social Liberal Union USL, headed by Victor Ponta and future presidential candidate Crin Antonescu to split up, Ponta still publicly says he supports Antonescu for the presidential seat. He said the institutional agreement he has with the president does not exclude support for Antonescu, as he believes Romania needs another kind of president.

“It is important that I continue to believe- apart from the personal prejudices I suffered because of the accusations - that the two institutions refrained from sabotaging each other, there was not war between us […], which I believe was a good thing for Romania. I looked at the opinion polls and most people, while not becoming my fans or Traian Basescu's fans, said that even if we don't like each other, we have to do our part of the job,” said the Prime Minister.
